Benefits of Seeing a Counseling Intern for Therapy

By Hillary Anderson

Have you wanted to start therapy and running into barriers to finding care? A counseling intern might be a good fit for you!

What is a counseling intern?
Counseling interns are graduate student mental health professionals who are in the last stage of their clinical experience before graduating, who hold a Counseling Trainee (CT) license.

What are the benefits on working with a CT?
Supervision: Interns work under the supervision of experienced licensed professionals, at their site and through their university. Typically, interns receive 2-3 hours of direct supervision per week, making this time in their training the most supervised of their careers. Interns are observed, evaluated, and provided feedback and suggestions to develop their skills and provide effective client care.

Greater Availability: Interns typically have a small client caseload and may have more scheduling flexibility due to this. They may have more options for when to schedule and be able to see you sooner than other providers who have longer wait times.

Affordability: Interns may provide care at a reduced rate, making therapy more accessible to clients with financial considerations who are seeking care.

Ongoing Education: Interns are consistently learning about methods, theories, and interventions to use when working with their clients. They frequently attend lectures, trainings, workshops, and conferences to increase their knowledge and understanding on how to integrate evidence-based best practices into their clinical work.

Mindset: Interns are eager to put their formal education and knowledge into practice in their clinical work. As part of their on-going education and supervision, interns typically come into the therapeutic space with a growth-mindset and a desire to increase their skills and abilities.
